Rev. Jerry Gomez, Parocial Vicar
At the turn of the century, a small group of residents in Mullica Hill met in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Irwin for the purpose of prayerful sessions. These meetings marked the inception of Catholic faith in this town. Under the direction of Reverend Walter Leahy, pastor of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Swedesboro, Sunday school began in March of 1901 for the children of those early pioneers.
Mr. & Mrs. W. Warren Atkinson donated property for the purpose of building a church and providing land for a cemetery. Construction began immediately with the laying of the cornerstone on August 6, 1901. Dedication of The Church of Holy Name of Jesus took place on November 24, 1901. The church was originally named a mission of St. Joseph. In July of 1903, the church became a mission of St. Bridget’s, Glassboro. Holy Name of Jesus celebrated its golden anniversary in 1951. In 1959, the house adjacent to the church was purchased for future use as a rectory. In 1961 Reverend James D. Gaffney, was named the first resident pastor.
As the congregation multiplied, the need for additional space to celebrate Mass and to instruct religious education students became apparent. The rectory and church could no longer provide for efficient teaching facilities. Under the direction of Reverend Ambrose S. Bryce (our pastor from 1980 until 1996), construction of a ParishCenter began in 1991 on land adjoining the church. The ParishCenter was officially dedicated in December of 1993. |
