BEST RISOTTO
blueplate
47 South Main Street, Mullica Hill

(from www.sjmagazine.net)
It’s hard to pinpoint what makes this dish so delicious, but some people say blueplate serves the best risotto they’ve ever tasted. Chef James Malaby credits the cooking process, which is all about stirring, he says. Not every chef puts in the time needed to keep the character of the rice, and he is proud to say he does. Malaby’s popular corn risotto includes creamy rice mixed with corn and parmesan cheese and is served with a hanger steak.
BEST SMOOTHIE
Harrison House Diner and Restaurant
98 North Main Street, Mullica Hill

(from www.sjmagazine.net)
Being a diner, Harrison House offers a huge list of foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, ranging from omelets to flounder to specialty burgers. However, one part of the menu resembles a juice bar listing. Look for Alexandra’s Awesome Smoothies, a selection of flavors from hazelnut to raspberry and everything in between. It’s only $3.25 for one flavor, but you could add as many as you like for an extra 50 cents each. Order your smoothie with coffee or without, with dairy or without. The combinations are endless, and yours for the making.
BEST CUSTOM COFFEE
Stir It Up

(from www.sjmagazine.net)
This community coffeehouse plays a variety of roles in Mullica Hill - it’s an art gallery, a concert venue and, of course, the local hangout. Area artists have created the jewelry and paintings on the wall. Small groups can hold parties or meetings in the private room or on the outdoor patio, and take advantage of the free internet service. Their pastries, especially the sticky buns, are just as great as the location. But the most unique part of this coffeehouse is you can create your very own coffee, down to your most particular wants. Choose the exact temperature, blend and flavor and the friendly staff will whip it up for you quickly. Unlike chain coffeehouses where you have only a few choices, Stir It Up lets you blend whatever your tastebuds desire.

Best Home Grown Wine—Heritage Vineyards of Richwood, Richwood: I’ve been to a few wineries in my day, even a few on the northern tip of California’s Napa Valley, and what always strikes me is the way wine people are so dedicated to family and the intimate, organic principles of friendship, faithfulness and richness of soul. Perhaps that’s why the beverage itself is so unbelievably good (most of the time). There’s no shortage of that vibe down here in Richwood…and it shows. Take a drive down there sometime and say hi to Bill and Penni Heritage, the farm’s owners and give them a pat on the back for us. They’re onto a good thing. (Quick Fact: Did you know New Jersey is the fifth largest wine-producing state in the union? Now you do.) N.D.
