THE ASPARAGUS FESTIVAL
SATURDAY, MAY 18th, 2024 | 11:30AM - 3:00PM
OLD TOWN HALL | 62 SOUTH MAIN STREET | MULLICA HILL, NJ 08062
The Asparagus Festival is returning with enhanced offerings and improved experiences.
The Harrison Township Historical Society is pleased to announce the return of our annual commemoration of the first air freight shipment of fresh produce in the United States. This year's festival will take place on Saturday, May 18th, almost exactly 102 years after 1000 pounds of asparagus was shipped on a Fokker monoplane from Mullica Hill to Boston.
The Mayor of Boston and the Governor of Massachusetts were among the first to enjoy fresh South Jersey asparagus that evening, and the event received national news coverage. Our festival celebrates this historic first that happened right here in Mullica Hill!
The 2024 Festival will showcase an expanded roster of chefs, exhibits, and entertainment.
The festival's signature event, the "Battle of the Chefs" asparagus tasting competition, will feature five esteemed chefs and three accomplished bakers and confectioners vying for the prestigious best recipe awards. This year, a distinguished panel of celebrity judges will join the public in selecting the winner. Tasting tickets are available now at Ticketleap for $20 each.
In addition, the Roughwood Center for Heritage Seedways will offer heirloom variety seeds and cookbooks for purchase, catering to the spring planting season. The Old Town Hall Museum will unveil its new exhibition, Last Call: Taverns and Temperance, alongside exhibits on asparagus, T-shirt and vintage cookbook sales, and engaging children's activities on the museum grounds.
Of course, the festival will also feature fresh, locally sourced asparagus available for purchase, celebrating the farm-to-table ethos.
